I created Rising Tides to educate youth about the significance of climate change and the importance of collaboration in solving complex problems. The organization focuses on educating players about key contributors to climate change, like carbon emissions, and encourages them to explore actionable solutions, such as renewable energy and conservation.
Inspired by the game Pandemic, I developed an educational game that emphasizes strategy and teamwork. Rising Tides is an immersive, collaborative, and competitive board game designed to simulate the challenges and strategies involved in combating climate change.
In this game, players assume the roles of leaders from five distinct institutions: Science, Government, Environmental Activist, Consumer, and Business. Each institution has its unique abilities, goals, and challenges in the quest to bring CO2 emissions down to zero and avert environmental catastrophe.
I built the game's website using a tech stack that includes ReactJs on Typescript for the frontend and NestJS with RethinkDB and Redis for the backend. Through extensive research on climate change and educational game design, followed by iterative beta testing, I refined the game to ensure it was both educational and engaging.
“Take Action Global,” a large climate education nonprofit, invited me to join them at two major climate action events, where I presented Rising Tides, highlighting our game’s potential as an educational tool.
